I'm an ameteure wildlife photographer and use S3 IS. often I feel the need for a tele converter lens.but, use of tripod is not possible at all condition, eg, shooting while moving in a boat or when there is not enough time to set up a tripod. after attachment of a tele, is it possible to operate the whole thing hand held ??

It would depend in lighting conditions, and how much movement you and the subject have going. If you are using a 2x teleconverter, your max focal length will be about 900mm. A rule of thumb is to use a shutter speed equal to your lens focal length, ie., 900mm = 1/900 sec. Your S3 has IS, so a little slower shutter speed might be okay, but depends on whether your motion in the boat will be too much to overcome also.

To achieve higher shutter speeds may require higher ISO, and wider aperatures. At full telephoto, your aperature is not too fast (wide open), so ISO seems the best option.

If you are shooting in full sunlight, you would probably be able to achieve higher shutter speeds to stop motion. Less sunlight will prevent this outcome, IMHO.
