I have been very impressed with my SD500 as far as functionallity is concerned, however I haven't spent much time examining the images it produces. Part of this is because I have little knowlege that would aid me in doing so.
Here are a few pictures I took on my recent trip to New Zealand with the SD500. |

I, too, am dissapointed with the picture quality of my SD500. I would say the majority of the pictures I take look soft, lacking detail my previous camera had (3.2MP Olympus). Sadly, it's too late to return it so I'll try to sell it and get something else.

I agree with you, the older S series cameras had sharper images and better color rendition relatively. I checked out the sample pictures on Steve's reviews and was a little underwhelmed by the SD500's shots.
I opted for the S70 which is about the same price as the SD500 but rendered much clearer images. Of course, it's not as compact. But it sports a wide 28mm zoom lense. |

A good friend loaned me her SD500, as I was thinking about an upgrade for my S410. Virtually every picture I shot with the S410 was better; clearer, more accurate exposure, better colors, etc. It really wasn't even a close contest. The S410 takes amazing pictures, and the SD500 just doesn't. I was especially disappointed with the purple fringing, blurred borders, and the noise (visible, not audible). The SD did have some nice extra features, but they're all gadgets and won't do a thing for picture quality.
Regards, Dean Lutz, FL G6, S410, S1 (just sold), S2 (just bought) |
