Daithi: Thanks for the warning. Strange thing about this is that it sounds very similar to the problem I'm having with the A80: in my case it's hit or miss.
I can take the same same shot with the same settings three times in succession and it may affect only one or all three. With mine, all white areas are replaced with pink/magenta. Additionally, when it occurs there is a thick black bar at the top of the frame. Very troubling, and the whole reason I'm seeking to replace the A80 with the best possible newer model in the point and shoot line [I have a Rebel XTi that I use for other purposes, but need a P&S when I do not want to bring the Rebel.] dg |

Thanks for the alert about this--spoke to Canon, sending it back. If they determine it's related to the problem they've detected, they'll fix it for free, even though it's out of warranty.

Good luck, hopefully they will fix it for free. From my experience Canon customer service is pretty good.
I also noticed the recall simply by looking for the 650is on Amazon, and it had completely disappeared. So I looked around and this is what I find. Good thing I waited, I will still buy this camera when it re-appears on the market - hopefully with all issues removed....... I will give them some time. |

Follow-up: Checked out the CCD advisory for which JimC posted a link. Contacted Canon, sent in my A80, and sure enough--a faulty sensor was the issue.
Canon provided a prepaid UPS label, replaced the sensor for free, and shipped it out yesterday--should have it back sometime next week. Not that's what I call great customer service: the camera has been out of warranty for a couple of years! :-) Thanks again, Jim! dg |
