Is it true that the 300D flash is manual pop-up only? I'd be surprised, but need clarification.

Untrue unless you are working in the "Creative" zone. In auto and the other pre-programmed modes it pops up when it thinks you need it - can be a bit of a pain sometimes!

It's also a fairly weak flash. Won't do much beyond about 10 feet or so. If you are used to that (other consumer grade cameras are similar) then it isn't a problem.
