I have a canon 5D and a few good lenses. Mostly, I am new at being paid for my services, I have just done a few senior portraits. And they were fine. I just did an engagement session this weekend, and I noticed I missed getting both persons in focus, I suspect with a too wide an aperture. Many were fine...but in others, the second party was soft. Is there a rule of thumb this is easy to remember with shooting more than one person with portrait lenses...thanks.

i really like 5.6 . it seems to be a sweet spot as far as sharpness and it gets a couple in focus. one mans humble opinion.

It's going to depend on the distance from the subject and focal length so I don't have a standard but with FF you are going to generally be safe at f8. I find that with f5.6 it is too shallow unless shooting wider than full length. I shot a family of 4 (really quick and nasty pose.... understatement) using f5.6 and even though it was quite a wide shot, full length it was a little soft on the parents at the back but not terrible.
