I just sold my Canon S3IS an up grading to either a XTI or 30D, I do mostly set up shots of knives,..should I go with a 50mm normal lense, or the kit lense, or something else? any help would be appreciated.

How big are your knives? Maybe a macro lens?

The largest knife would be around 17 inches long .

I would expect the kit lens at f8 would do you just fine for full-length shots of the knives.
Shoot under controlled lighting and on a tripod and you'll be aces. I would certainly recommend spending the extra money on a tripod and lighting/display setup rather than more money on the lens. If you want to get in really close on some of the detail then a macro lens might be a good idea (and would serve for the other shots too). Because you have a static subject the focal length of the lens is not terribly important. The EF-S 60mm Macro is supposed to be optically quite spectacular. |
