Canon Blasts to 11 Million Pixels
Canon will soon put on sale worldwide a new 11-megapixel single-lens reflex digital still camera that offers higher resolution than any professional camera on the market.

Canon said the new EOS-1Ds offer a maximum resolution of 4064 x 2704, almost double the highest resolution available in other digital cameras. The EOS-1Ds take Canon's proprietary CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) technology further with an imaging area of 24 x 36mm, the same dimensions used by full-frame 35mm SLR cameras. In addition to the 11.1-million pixels, CMOS sensors use only 1/5 to 1/10 as much power as the more commonly used CCDs (charge-coupled device) sensors. The main difference between CCDs and CMOS sensors is in the way the stored charges are converted into a usable signal. Up to now, CMOS image sensors had a maximum size of 6.3 million pixels.

Yukiaki Hashimoto, vice president and general manager of Canon USA photographic products group, said in a statement: "The features of this camera, combined with the largest selection of lenses and accessories of any SLR system in the industry, will provide the ultimate imaging device for pros." The camera also includes 45-point autofocus, 21-point evaluative metering, simultaneous RAW + JPEG recording. It is capable of shooting up to 3 frames per second in 10-frame bursts and comes bundled with software utilities for Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Additional camera features include an ISO range of 100-1250, high-speed IEEE 1394 interface and auto-switching FAT16/FAT32 member card formatting capability.
