Can anyone help me understand setting color temp. on a 20D. It can be set from 2800K to 10,000K. How does one determine the "right temperature". Thanks

There is no "right" value in the way (that I think) you're looking for.
Light has a color. Just like the average light bulbs don't produce "white" light, they are often yellow. Sun light is white, but it isn't white in shade or in shadow. Color temperature lets you adjust for the color of the light. Bascially, I just adjust it until the picture looks right. Some times I use one of the preset colors, and other times I adjust from there. Eric |

Thanks for the reply.
I understand about the temp of color when it comes to editing etc. What I don't understand is in the menu of the 20D you can set the color temp. This pre set temp is one of the options available when you select K when setting the white balance. Maybe there is a measuring device that tells the K temp in a given situation. - (like a light meter.) I remain confused. |

there are extremely accurate handheld color temp meters out today such as the minolta color meter IIIF that measure light very accurately as far as color temp for the proper correction. in modeling and product shots this can allow flexible correction or enhancement of setups.

Or you could shoot in raw and fine-tune the color temp when you do the conversion.
But, yes, you can buy a meter that will measure the color temp. Eric |

The color meter is not exactly cheep http://www.vistek.ca/details/detail_...cs=N&Box=Nbut what in photography is ? :-)
I think I prefer to just go RAW, and adjust when converting. Peter. |
