I need something to trigger my Canon Speedlites... Are there any alternatives to Canon's ST-E2? :?

Yeah - The Sigma EF 500DG Super!

It's another flash, but like any Master(i.e. 550/580EX) you can turn its output off and control the slave groups this way - The bad news is it'll cost about the same as the ST-E2, but unlike the former which is just a controller -> you're getting another flash head for free (and quite powerful at that too, almost equal to the 550EX in GN)!

Thanks, NHL!! That sounds like a great choice...

Are there any downsides? (less controls, settings, etc)

You might want to download the manual first...

It's has even more features than the Canon's units such as the built-in photo sensor mode or the manual mode with the distance scale indicator as guide. The main difference which is slightly confusing is Sigma calls the various group of slaves 1, 2, and 3 (which matches with Minolta who came out with this wireless sytem 1st), but Canon call theses groups A, B, and C instead.
Other than that they work the same way
