I use the self timer on my 300D to take tripod mounted shots. I want to get a remote release but am dismayed by the choices. There areCanons, wired and wireless, and several off brands including very inexpensive ones on e-Bay. Any comments from users would be appreciated. P.S. Can I engage mirror lock on a 300D with one of the remotes?

Usually there's two switches in most remote (wired or wireless):
1 to control the AF/AE (1/2 press of the shutter)
2 to control the the shutter release (full press)

For the price I would buy a full RF remote: http://www.zap-shot.com/
or make it yourself: http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/...onRelease.html
I believe the 300D also has a built-in IR receiver to work with RC-1 (and RC-5) or compatible 3rd party, but you have to be in-front of the camera

-> The mirror lock-up function is programmed from the camera, just like you would normally do with the shutter release

I have both of the remote releases, wired and IR. I use the wired release 90% of the time and have no problems.

Both of my remote releases were purchased on Ebay.

NHL, I have taken your advice in the past and found it very sound. I don't doubt your recommeneded product is first rate but,for $ 120.00, I'll keep using the self timer. Have you used anything cheaper?

I'm just trying to give you 3 different possibilities:
RF and wired are very similar because they use the same contacts inside the camera - they tend to be more robust
The IR method require line of sight and in-front of the camera's IR receiver which tend to be not as reliable

-> Wired and IR are pobably the least expensive
