I tried compact macro 50mm and need to get too far away for large paintings that I shoot outside on sturdy tripod. Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced zoom for xti with a short focal point with lowest barrel distortion close up and corner to corner sharpness? thanks.

You'll find most zooms go through a distortion shift from pincusion to barrel as it zooms from wide angle to tele...with least distortion somewhere in the middle, and that point will differ with the lenses...

Distortions (pin-cushion or barrel) can be fixed through software like DXO Optics... The problem is most lenses are not flat-field but focuses along a curvature which is not there on a Macro (i.e. center to corner sharpness)!

Backing up is the most likely solution I'm afraid (even if you find a good zoom)
