Hi all How do I use an External Flash? I have one on the new rebel xti but it doesn't flash what do I need to do?

what kind of flash is it and not being a wise guy but did you read the directions?

Nope I didn't lol. its an OLD canon flash for an ae-1 but it fits my canon rebel xti though.

Cover all the small contacts around the main contact in the middle onyour flash with electrical tape, it should work fine with your XTI or any dslr.

Those small contacts serve to communicate with you AE-1, when you stick it to your XTI the camera doesn't recognize the flash that's why it didn't fire. The main contact in the middle is for the camera or any camerato activate the open/close circuit of the the flash.

Save money to buy the EX series flash for your XTI, if you can't afford one, you can get a used Sunpak 383 for about $40, it's a non dedicated one contact flash works with every dslr.

Thank you gang. I will be gettting a speedlite series flash but the one that comes witht he canon in p mode Works awesomely
