It reads that it has the same sensor as the XTi.

That would make it a pumped up XTi as opposed to a cut down Mark III.

The specs of the 40D are pretty amazing.

Not quite the same sensor

"Although it is based on the image sensor used in the EOS Digital Rebel XTi, the EOS 40D Digital SLR's 10.1-megapixel CMOS APS-C size image sensor has been significantly improved thanks to the use of larger microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and expand sensitivity up to ISO 3200."

I agree that it should be a great camera.

I agree, reading over the specs is pretty impressive and the price is less than what I gave for the 30D. Can't justify the new MIII but I think I see a new 40D in my future.

Just curious as to why this isn't on the Canon USAwebsite.

I think Amazon just jumped the gun - the official announcement appears to be tomorrow. Besides, what's Canon going to do to a mega seller like Amazon?
Ron

Edit to add that an employee of a different, (un-named), retailer sez they will have it on the shelf Sept. 2 for $1599 with a 18-135 IS lens.
