newbie question

Canon 30d w/70-200mm Sigma 2.8 APO DG macro HSM, works fine, autofocus fine

If I add a 1.4x Sigma APO EX TC, I get an "error 01", communications error between the lens and camera. No autofocus.

I thought.... that the 1.4x Sigma TC worked withthis 2.8 Sigma lens. Am I in error or is the TC bad?

Any ideas?

Thanks !!

The older lenses made by Sigma had to be re-chipped to work with newer Canon bodies. You might need to do that.
Call Sigma at 1-800-896-6858 and ask for tech support.

-> The Sigma 2.8 APO DG macro HSM is brand new!
(i.e. just released a few months ago) - beside it works fine by itself according to Altos

The 1.4x can go bad though - I have the bad habit of pocketing the TC in my jacket/jeans for convenience and it can kill the electronic inside from static...

Does the 1.4x work with other lenses???

Don't know yet as I only have the one lens (so far). Just starting a new setup.

As you noted, this zoom is a new version and works 100% by itself with the 30D. However, it sure seems as though the 1.4x has (somehow) died. There are compatibility lists for the TC and lenses, and they all indicate that it should... be a match.

Others have tried this set-up with success. I am just trying to find out if I have done something stupid or forgot to do ????

Thanks for the reply ! Any other insights appreciated.

Both the 1.4x and 2x Sigma's TC work with the 70-200 f/2.8 and 120-300 f/2.8.
-> I used theses combination all the time!

Sorry if I was not clear - I was talking about the tc. Best to call Sigma now.
Would it be possible to go to a camera store and try another lens, and then add the tc? That should at least answer the question about the tc.

From the village of newbies... the mayor speaks:

"Didn'treceivethe digital version (DG) expected and didn't check the TC carefully enough when received to see if it was a DG versionbefore testing it. Wrong version (film, not DG). Soooo.... sending back the film version with the correct DG version heading my way."

Gawd, being a newbie is tough. Scars. High blood pressure. Panic. Idiot-centric.

But, the basis for my new system (30D and Sigma 70-200 2.8) is... stunningly awesome. The incorrect TC can be manually focused for testing and when the correct unit arrives will be an event for me as I am used to the Minota A2 results. Not knockin' the A2 as a carry-around mule for dirty duty (nice, functional, works all the time, a rock when you need one), but the 30D and the Sigma are in another league.

I have been missing a lot... gonna be fun....

thanks for all the help !!!!

My 70-200 f/2.8 is not a DG either and it works fine with any TC... (DG only add a reflection coating to the glass!)
-> BTW - HSM lenses never need any "re-chipping" theses are all manufactured after 2000!

I have the same TC and lens, works on 400D fine and 5D fine but not the 40D????

I has trouble focusing on the 40d and photo's are all over exposed and blurred..
Has anyone else experienced this?
