I just got a 40d and I have an old polarizer filter that will fit my 28-135 lens. I have just heard about "circular polarizers". Do I need a circular polarizer for my 40D, or will my old filter underexpose my photos. Also, what brand of filter do you prefer?

As long as it is a circular polarizer it will work...It will add a couple of fstops though so keep that in mind...But I assume you will be using it out side in bright sun...They are really good around water to stop glare...They also deepen the colors in your shot...Not much difference from when you used it with your film camera...

I assume you have the older linear polarizer.

From Luminous Landscape about polarizers:

Circular Vs. Linear Polarizers
There are two types of polarizing filters available — linear or circular. Linear polarizers are more effective and less expensive than circular ones. But circular polarizers are needed with just about any camera that has a through-the-lens metering system, or autofocus.

Quite unlikely that he has linear PL if he used it on any old EOS camera. LPL's were quite usual in the MF era, but that's a long long time ago...

I bet it's a CPL, if it ever worked with any AF system on that lens.
