I presume you didn't read the whole Verdict, just looking for the negatives. So for some balance:

Anyway, the resolution capabilities of the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is nothing short of amazing.
A lot of the time vignetting is actually an advantage, in PP you add it in as often as you dial it out.

CA (only at 28mm was it a problem) + barrel distortion (only at 18mm was it a problem) - these things are mostly not visible in normal usage anyway and trivial to correct if using a program like DXO.

It completely blows away the 16-35 L Mk II and the 17-40L for resolution and isn't that much worse than the 17-40 regarding CA on average and better in some places. It's a bit slower but has more range and 3-4 stop IS.

It's better than the 17-85 IS on distortion and CA and vignetting and resolution at every shared focal length!

All that for only $180 is certainly changing the ballgame IMO.

I challenge you to find a better standard zoom lens for the XTI that you would buy instead for general usage.

But, I wouldn't call it the lens of the year
I think that might be a dangerous bet. Fancy a small wager on the next EISA or TIPO awards? :blah:

I agree...

-> It also eliminates all the Sigma, Tamron, and the likes from consideration unless you really want a fast lens!
