i was wondering if the kit lens (18-55mm) that came with the canon 350d was one of the special made ones for the 22.2mm sensor or if it was made for a normal 35mm camera to where it would have a 1.6x crop?

im asking this because the new version they came out with that has IS is made specifically for the sensor size! thanks!

The EF-S 18-55mm II kit lens is for APS-C sensor cameras only. It sticks in deeper inside the camera and would interfere with the mirror operation of a full frame 35mm camera.

I think you may have misunderstood. Both kit lenses (18-55) and the IS version are made for APS-C cameras only. You do not get 18mm-55mm with the kit lens, you have to multiply it by 1.6. So it's really a 29-88mm lens. You can't attach them to a "normal" camera as they would not function correctly.

oh, so whats the point of making is a special lens then?

and thanks for clearing that up!

edit: also i have a canon t2 with the 28-90mm kit lens, that would fit on the xt, but the xt kit lens wont fit on anything else except the xti and other similar models right?

any EF-S lens will fit only the 1.6X cropped sensor. Which includes 40D, XTi and their previous sad cousins/brothers/sisters.

Any EF lens will fit any canon DSLR.

No FD lens (I say with regret coz some zooms are lot cheaper. Ok if there is a little degradation in image....but still canon should have allowed a mount to fit EF and FD lens's) will fit any of the new generation canon DSLR's

Sad but true....

and no lens can get rid of the 1.6 crop factor of a 22mm sensor correct?

Size, weight and cost. They can make the lenses smaller if the image circle projected doesn't have to cover a larger sensor.
