update:

I charged my two batteries, removed the grip and tried each individually. The result is the same, 5 shots and on the 6th up comes the error 99. Turn the camera off and then on - one shot and error 99. This time you have to take out the battery and restart and the error message comes up with no shot. After skiing tomorrow I'll pick up a new battery and give it another try. If that doesn't work, I'll pick up the 40D and have the 30D repaired and use it as a second body.

Hi Jim

I have the same problem. I read ur last post. u were talking about buying a new battery. Did it solve the problem err99?
I bought a new battery but it didnt help me. So I sent my camera to canon service.
