Off topic here, but who ever decided how many megapixels it takes for a certain size print to look good? I took the Avatar on the left here with my original Digital Rebel (300D) which has 6.3 MP I believe. I had it printed to a 20x30inch poster at Kodakgallery (back then Ofoto). It looks spectacular, and even if you are 10 inches away from the poster, you cannot see the pixels. You have to literally kiss the poster to see the individual pixels. I have posters printed in similar sizes made from "real film" back then, and they don't look any better. So why is it that everyone believes that you needa kazillion megapixels to print a smallish poster? Just curious really, not an attack on you, sparrowminded!

i know of professionals (atleast were using till last august) the 4MP canon 1D. They used to print posters.

But the printing is usualy done through professional printing agencies.

The MP war for printing i guess is mostly for cosumers with consumer printers or getting prints from places like Costco or wallmart.

Yeah, for most people, megapixels really won't increase the quality of their prints. In many cases over the last few years we've seen quality DECREASE because of the mp war - cramming too many onto the same size sensor. It CAN be advantageous, but I would argue there are a lot more features more important.

I just wonder when Canon, Nikon and company are going to quit this silly MP race, and concentrate on quality, especially dynamic range improvements. I would gladly go from 10MP back to let's say 8MP, if the quality was better. Sure, it's nice to be able to crop, but how far are we going to take this. Plus, the storage size is getting a little out of hand too.
