Has anyone done the latest firmware update to their 40D camera? The instructions say you should (suggest) a AC power supply in order to do the update. Is this required in order to complete the firmware update?

Thanks,

Craig

When you are flashing any type of rom chip you do not want the power to cut out in the middle of the erase/write function. Having this occur can turn the device into a "brick" since an incomplete flash leaves portions of the chip (startup parameters, etc.) blank.

That being said, the school of thought is that using a battery that is not fully charged can cause you to lose power during the process. However having a power failure or circuit breaker trip will cause the same thing if you are using an AC adapter.

I suppose if you really wanted to be safe you could hook the AC adapter into a UPS and then you would be covered on all fronts.

I don't know how long the firmware update would be but considering the battery life on my 40D I would be confident (With a FULLY charged battery) of having enought power to complete a firmware update.

A quick call to Canon would get you the info on how long the camera needs to complete the firmware update. Assuming it is less than 5 minutes you would (IMO) be fine.

a fully charged workingbattery is more than enough.

Thanks, guess I'll give it a try seeing no one has had anything bad to say about doing the update.

Thanks again,

Craig
