Hi all,

I'm considering to buy a Canon 400D or 40D. But what would really keep me from either one is annoying auto popup flash, be it for actual flashing or for AF assist beam.

As far as I've found out reading specs/reviews, there is a 'flash-off' program on the mode dial wheel.

Is there another possibiliy to disable even the popping-up of the flash in other programs (A,S,P, Portrait, Landscape etc.)?

Will it sometimes just pop up inexpectedly and you'll have to push it back down all the time?

There are just too many situations when an automatic AF strobe or even just the sound of the flash unit jumping up may be inappropriate.

Thank you for your comments!

Thanks for you reply

I was hopping that it can be disabled, it would have been a shame if it couldn't, on such a pricey camera.

Auto pop-up can be really annoying...

I think I'll get one :-)

On the Digital Rebels, the flash does not pop out automatically in P, Av, Tv andM modes. It only does that in the green mode and the special modes. I think most of us enthusiasts probablymostly use P, Av, Tv, and M so this is not a problem, at least for me.
