I have a 40D and an older Vivitar 283 external flash. Should I shoot shutter priority at 1/250 or 1/60 to sync the flash?

It's up to you, the 40D will sync up to 1/250th so anything up to that will ensure that you get the full frame with flash displayed.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #000000"An nice easy answer for an easy question... however there are other things to consider, like how much ambient light you want to capture in the image. For example you might find at 1/250th you get the subject illuminated well but everything else is black, changing the settings to 1/60th and boosting the ISO for example will allow more of the background to be seen. Have a play around and see what you get.

if ur using the vivitar on board, or using wires to connect it to the camera, 1/250 would do. but if ur using wireless i would set it to 1/160 or more(more meaning 1/160..1/125 etc)... But either ways i always set it up to one shutter slower than the ctual sycn speed of the camerea. In my 5D i used to set it up at 1/160 while in mark III, its at 1/250. Still not at the maximum camera synch speed.

I have the vivtar 285s. If its used in remote strobes, i make sure my camera speed is set to 1/160

Is the Vivitar 283 trigger voltage safe to use attached to the 40D hot shoe? I also own Vivitar 283 with vari power module and remote trigger hot shoe, so it would be nice if I could still use this flash. At least while I save up for the 580EX ll flash, then I can use the Vivitar 283 and a Canon 300 EZ Speedlite as slaves.

the 285s i have is HV. So they are pretty safe with trigger voltage aound ~6v. Not sure about the 283. But again, i have never mounted these flashes on the camera. But used eiter a remote or a sync chord. So never had a problem

u may wanna check the voltage.

Think I'll send Canon an e-mail and ask them to be sure.
