Default How does the D300 perform in close up work?

How does the D300 perform in close ups with the lens that it
comes with?

I need to shoot rings and other small, dimensional objects. My CP950 has been great for this because of its inherent close up capability and amazing depth of field in close quarters.
Will the D300 do as well?

No, the DOF of the 300D will be much smaller. Depending on the macro work, it can be stunningly small (less than 1/2 an inch is not uncommon.) I don't believe the lens which comes with the 300D is a macro lens. I could be wrong, though... I haven't paid that much attention to it.
