I have a quick question:I currently use a Canon rebel XT with some pretty good glass - mainly a Canon 70-200mm IS. I am considering upgrading to the Canon 40D and I am curious if I will notice any difference in my shoots. I shoot 90% otdoor sports - softball and I have lovedthe results from my rebel. I have had it for about three years and have taken thousands of pictures. Should I stay with the Rebel? Am I wasting money if I upgrade?

absolutely not. You'll notice a huge difference in AF performance. The better burst rate is also a bonus to a sports shooter, as is the build quality. Although the 40d is larger and heavier.

But no question what soever the 40d is a far superior sports camera than the xt.

after three years of XT use u will see a mountain of difference. Go for it. 40D is a terrific camera compared to even the 30D in my opinion.
