hi
anyone know the max size of memory card the 450d can read, i was hoping a 16gb sandisk ultra II SDHC

If you refer toPage 3of our Canon XSi/450D review, then scroll down to the Image Storage JPEG, you can see Canon has a 16GB card listed.

So, to answer your question, Yes a 16GB Sandisk UltraII SDHC card should work just fine.

But do you want just one big card, personally I would opted for a couple of 8 Gigs, or possibly a number of 4 Gig cards, nothing worse that loosing a card or one going corrupt, could potentially loose a lot of pictures.
