Any time there is light .

Any light source can cause lens flare so no matter if I'm shooting studio, in a gym or outdoors I will always use the hood.

I use the lens hood all the time, I look cooler that way. Like a "real" photographer.:-))

Mark hit it one the nose - anytime there is light! The hood stops flare protects the front of the lens if you do something klutzy and bump it. The exception is you may have to remove the hoodwhen shooting flash with the built in pop up flash. Some of the larger hoods block the flash and produce a dark area in the picture. I use off camera flash and recommend it butI don't carry it around all the time and must occasionally use the pop up.
