What a good external flash for the 40D. I do have the Canon 550 EX speedlite.

I'm not sure that you are going to save too much weight if you want the power that you are used to. You can probably save about 100g by going to the Canon 430EX or the news SigmaEF530 ST DG or for a better feature set then the DG Super from Sigma which is still a little lighter thanwhat youhave. Personally if you want good flash this is a non issue or just use the built in one when you can't carry the extra weight.
