Here is a series of shots in increasing ISO from 800 to 12,800. Straight out of the camera - no post processing at all. All shot with Canon 50D, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 at 2.8.

1. 1/30s ISO 800 (some camera shake evident)

Aside from a couple times where it has sort of 'locked up', I've been extremely happy with the 50D. Way better autofocus and exponentially better high ISO than my 350D...

The pictures look very usable up to ISO 3200.

My Canon 20D looks usable up to ISO 1600.

So, it looks to me like the 50D is giving you one extra ISO setting before the noise get's noticeable.
