Default 300d Lens Help

Just ordered 300D--no experience with interchangeable lens, have been a Sony DSC770 user last 4 years. Would like to take close-up action shots at son's high school football games--will not be real close to action and will be shooting mainly at night, will not be using tripod very often--any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Not asking for much, are you.

Heh, sounds like you need a big, expensive lens. You want 'close-up action shots'. That means you need a big telephoto lens at least 300mm. You want to shoot mainly at night, with no tripod. That means you need a fast lens, which is bigger and more expensive.

How about the 400 F/2.8L IS, it's only about $7,000. Heh.

Try the 'Canon Lenses' forum when discussing lenses, you might get more responses.
