Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the site and new to photography.
I just got my new EOS 450d/XSi dslr today and can't wait to play with it.

I read a lot about slr camera's and specifically the eos 450d.
I know I have a steep learning curve seeing that this is my first camera but I feel up to the challenge and like to learn new things.

For now I just have the standard 18-55mm IS kit lens but are on my way to order the 75-300mm USM lens from canon as I'm hoping to photograph a lot of birds and wild life.

Will post some pics soon.

Hi and welcome to Steve's.

Congratulations on your new purchase and I'm sure you will find Steve's a good place to learn.

As for the 75-300mm lens, I personally wouldn't go down this road it is one of the weakest lenses that Canon make being pretty soft at 300mm. I would look at something like the Tamron 70-300 or the Sigma 70-300mm APO.

Happy shooting,

Mark

Just to add on to Mark's comment - Canon DOES make an excellent 70-300 IS USM lens. It's just the 75-300 that is poor. The Canon 70-300 is the best, followed by the Tamron then the Sigma and finally the Canon 75-300.

Good luck and again, welcome to the forums. It's generally a very helpful and friendly bunch here.

Actually for birds and wildlife you may want the Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX HSM...

Why?
A 300mm tends to be on a short end for most wildlife especially birds!

-> The Sigma 100-300 is an f/4 so it'll take an 1/4x bringing you up to 420mm f/5.6 and it's also the sharpest - It rather goes like this: Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX, Canon 70-300, Tamron, Sigma 70-300mm and finally the Canon 75-300

Almost as good as a Canon 400mm L prime (with a 1.4x too) which is saying something about this Sigma zoom:
