I got to visit a very nice camera store in downtown Indy yesterday. Not sure if it's okay to give you their name here. (Mods, if it's okay to name the company, please let me know).

This store is not your run of the mill camera store but truly a regional site for the professionals. For example, they STOCK 3 or 4 complete lines of tripods, rather than just having 3 or 4 tripods of different sizes to choose from.

Anyway, theyhave a USED Canon 5D for about $1700.

I'm guessing that in about a year, the Canon 5D mark II will be available for under $2000. I might be wrong, you should see the recent damage to my 401k if you're interested in my ability to anticipate the financial future!

I'm leaning towards waiting the year for the Mark ii and waiting a year or so.

Is there enough difference in these two cameras that would warrant waiting year and paying the extra?

I got to hold and shoot both the 5D and the 5d mark ii Saturday. Both are fantastic camera and I loved the size of them.

Thanks!

FP

By then the original 5D will also depreciate to something much less than $1700 too

IMO there's enough feature upgrades to justify the difference (The rear LCD screen for one is worth it alone, to others it may be the video...)

As long as you're not mentioning them for personal gain and have no affiliation with them, we don't mind members discussing specific vendors here.

But, please do not plug businesses that you're associated with here (we consider that to be Spam, and don't allow our forums to be used for advertising).

I took a quick look at the 5D listings at my favorite vendors of used gear (keh.com, bhphotovideo.com).

Right this minute, it looks like keh.com has at least five EOS-5D bodies for sale, running from $1379 for one in EX condition (and keh has very conservative ratings) to $1479 for bodies in LN- condition.

Canon Digital Bodies at keh.com

They also have a 60 day warranty on used gear:

It looks like B&H has some 5D bodies, too (ranging from $1399 to $1549, depending on condition)

Used Canon dSLR Bodies at B&H

B&H also has a warranty on used gear (30 days on digital):

As an owner and user of Canon equipment including a Mark II, I can say that while the 5D is a great camera, the Mark II is oh so much better. I am simply amazed at the consistent high-quality shots and the exceptional ability to crop small portions from each file.

All opiniated arguements aside, its 21mp and outstanding high ISO ability have been of great value to me in the short time I have owned it. Its somewhatdifficult to use HD "movie" mode is outstanding, but of lesser use to me ... nonetheless, it is that potential which makes the camera of greatestvalue to me. And with EF-L lenses, the photos (and video) are tack sharp and simply amazing.

While it may be that prices will fall, there is an equal chance they will increase depending on the value of our weakening dollar. If you can afford it, get the 5D Mark II. You will not regret it.
