You are quite correct.

The issue was that the original poster was very unhappy with his new 300D because of the amount of noise he saw. He thought his 300D might be defective...

Personally, I think he's just looking a bit too closely...

He just needs to look at the pictures on a G5. I was actually blown away at how little noise I saw on an ISO1600 picture eariler.

Default RAW Images are Noiser than the JPEGs on the EOS 300D

I've started used the RAW mode and the noise level is definitely there. Without processing to remove the noise the large JPEGs look better to my eyes.
