Default Shooting Sports with 20D and an 70-200 f/2.8

Hello everyone,

My wife shot some action pictures today at our scrimmage football game and while some of the are great, others drop off focus on the background, the foreground is in focus, however, some players directly behind are out of focus? I am posting a few of the images to be an example, any help would be great. All have mulit-pattern metering and were f/2.8 and shutter priority of 1/5000 or 1/6400.

Also, besides the DOF issue, you want to be sure you are using only the center focus point (not all points) - that way you can be sure the camera focuses on the player you are interested in and not another player or the background. You also want to be sure AI-Servo focus is turned on.

You could increase your f-stop to bring more of the background into focus. But this makes the opening smaller and will force you to bring down shutter speed.

Unless it is a very bright day, this may result in some blurring of the subjects because of their motion.

On your next outing, try playing around with the aperture settings - go above 2.8 and see how the background focus improves but watch your motion blur also.
