on a budget, i would grab the Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 IS. its relatively cheap ~250USD, but the optics are good and the IS works quite well. build quality isn't great, but its nothing of concern really. and it marries well with the kit lens.

if you can spend more the Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS ~550USD is a great tele with better build quality and faster AF, and covers more range. its quite a bit more expensive, but still a good value, given its optical performance.

as for flash, i would go with the Canon 430 EX II ~250USD

thanks for the recommendations. since i'm a beginner and on a budget i'll probably go for the Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 IS.

If you want to save a little bit the Metz 48 is every bit as nice as the 430 EX II with more reach. 48 meters vs 430 meters.

But the ef-s 55-250 IS is a nice light weight lens, I have it along with the ef 70-300mm IS USM. I like the ef-s lens for traveling and it is a pretty sharp lens.

Bought the XSi (450) with the 18-55 IS kit lens - a few weeks ago I got the 55-250 IS (perfect for my needs) and I'm totally happy with it! I think you call it the "best bang for the buck" - so I really can recommend this lens (if you're on a budget)

If you don't want to stick with the Canon brand, the Metz flash shoturtle mentioned would be a great choice!
