As big as they come.

The XSi uses SD and SDHC cards. There is no upper limit.

another quick question - I have always used SD cards. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to using SDHC cards?

The two distinguishing characteristics are capacity and speed. If you shoot video or shoot continuous, you should get faster cards that you could get away with otherwise.

As far as speed goes, there's no difference between an SD and an SDHC card, and for all intents and purposes, the only difference between an SD and an SDHC card is capacity. SD cards use the FAT16 file system to store files, which is limited to just under 4GB total capacity; SDHC cards use the FAT32 file system which has a much larger capacity.
