It all sounds very strange. I know you know how to take a photo as I've seen your shots from the 1DmkII (I think it was) so it is not that you are a novice.

Please post something and a 100% crop on the focus area (where it should be) and a crop where it is sharp. That might give an idea.

Do you mean a 100% crop of the anomaly, where nothing is in focus, and then another shot where focus was obtained correctly? When the anomaly happens I cannot give a crop of a sharp part of the image because there is none.

Ah OK so the anomaly is vastly out, not just missing the point you want in focus, the whole frame is soft/completely out of focus?

Correct.. I'm talking complete out of focus. I do get some missed focus shots where it might have caught focus on something fore or aft but thats to be expected.

Im using One Shot > AF > Center Focus Point > Focus search can be on or off.

UPDATE: I removed the main and memory battery and let it sit. I have not been able to duplicate it again.

Wow, let's hope that there was something silly going on that clearing all memory or whatever (I'm not technical in this area) has sorted it and you can start enjoying your photography again.

I wonder whether it would be simply worth replacing the battery.

I have a vague notion from an article I think I read somewhere that camera electronics need very good and well regulated power delivery, a dud battery can cause all sorts of issues - from misfocusing, through excessive noise, card corruption, IS problems, etc.

I guess that could be a possibility. If the issue comes up again I will give that a shot.

So would I be right in saying that you've had over a full day with the camera and still no issues since yesterdays update?
