Default Error message Rebl XS/Quantaray lens

I have a new Canon EOS Rebel XS. I took my 70-300mm AF Quantary (for Canon AF) off of my old Rebel 2000 EOS and mounted it. I got a error message to clean contacts and communication between lens and camera was bad. How do I clean and any other suggestions?

Actually, the best way to clean electrical contacts is with a pencil eraser. It's a simple method of cleaning the oxidation off the metal contacts. Be sure that the erasures don't get stuck someplace, though.

But I'm not certain that's the actual problem. Your lens may need a chip upgrade in order to work with a dSLR.

The quickest way to see if you need to have it rechip if the cleaning does not work is to put it back on the rebel 2000 and if it works there, your contacts are good. Then the lens may needs to get rechipped.
