Default Which portrait lens

As mentioned in my first topic my interest's are motor bikes and racing , so nearly having decided on the t/photo side of lenses to go with my 10D (until someone else changes my mind again) what would be a good choice for taking shots at shows of the classics bearing in mind you could be outside or under cover , i was thinking of the relatively cheap Cannon 50mm f1.8 which sells for about 80 over here. Any other suggestions ,or would this be the best one with the 1.6 factor

I've heard quite good things about using that lens for a portrate lens. I have it and like it a lot.
