Default 10D AV Out

Anyone know of a way to enable viewing what the camera is looking at BEFORE capture? Most compact digital cameras appear to be able to do this. I want to hook up the 10D to a monitor or tv to compose certain shots.

Yes, buy a prosumer or lower cam. Attach it to the 10D with stage tape and look at the lcd ;-)

More serious, this is impossible, as the miror glass is between the sensor and lens. At occassions a wish for half transparant mirror glas is found at this forum. For now, none of the d-slr have a lcd preview mode. That said there are different viewfinder assecoires available for the 10D.

Thanks Mathilde. As we sometimes are known to say, how bleedin' obvious! If one but thought a trifle more! Is there such a thing as digital stage tape?

Well the only thing I can think of, is a crappy webcam attached to the viewfinder....Maybe a large viewfinder (optional 10D assecoire) should be bought to make it work. In any case you can customize it into dedicated monitor preview device. (the rubber eye piece is a loose object that slides on the camera)

The other thing to consider is because of the retracting mirror, the sensor(or CCD) only needs to work a fraction of a second when an image is capture... and why a tiny battery would last almost a 1000 shots.

If this sensor has to capture live preview (as on most "prosumer" cameras), then the same battery would have gone kaput long before that!

Quite true. I also prefer a decent viewfinder above a lcd preview. prosumer and smallker digital cameras may allow for disabling the preview, but their viewfinders are in most cases too small to be usefull
