Default question about ISO data

I received some photos from a friend and happened to have a look at the exif data and noticed it showed the ISO as Auto ISO 100 but also base ISO 400. Just wondering what this exactly means? by the way the camera is a canon 1000D

Auto ISO 100 means that the camera is set to an ISO of 100, but as the lighting changes, the camera is free to increase the ISO (up to a predetermined limit) in order to obtain properly exposed photographs. The ISO in the photo you examined was 400, which means that, in order to set the exposure values so as to get a properly exposed photo, the camera raised the ISO to 400.
