As far as 70-200 goes, Sigma makes that a F2.8 lens. I don't believe there is a 70-200 F4 from Sigma? Canon has three versions of a 70-200L. A F4, a F2.8 and a F2.8 with IS.

my opinion is the go with the faster lens not IS.

About the only downside to a 70-200f2.8 lens is that they're heavy and quite big. I don't know how useful it would be for pictures of little ones, they move so fast it would be hard to keep up with them with the big glass.

What I have is a 70-210 f2.8, a 28-105 f2.8-4 (quite like it) and the 18-55 EF-S. I'm going to get the 50mm in the new year. About the only other thing I'd like to get is a 24-70 f2.8 lens, that and the 28mm tilt-shift lens.

There you have it... but here's my 2c anyway (regardless of which brand you'll end up chosing!):
1. An f/2.8 get you a shallower DOF which is what you like in the 1st place as well as faster shutter speed for stopping actions over IS.
2. With an 1.4x teleconverter, or even with a 2x (preferably matched to the lens) you can still have your cake and eat it too, a second lens: a 140-400mm f/5.6 with an AF still working (unlike the 28-135 IS USM)!

BTW I've just got a 50-500mm f/4-6.3 recently, but seriously considering changing it for a 120-300mm f/2.8 for exactly the same reason... ie an f/2.8 makes all the difference, sometime you just can't dial sunlight up any brighter (or tell your subject to stop moving)!

Well, I have started my lense quest. I purchased the 50mm 1.8f lense. For a start, it was an easy choice. I have to wait till christmas, though, for my wife to "give" it to me. Then I think the Tamron will be the next one. Thanks for all the input.

Feel lucky - I have been reading up on the Canon 50mm 1.8 II and just decided to pull the trigger and order 1 from B&H yesterday for my digital rebel. Got my confirmation that the lens is on its way - now when I look at their site today they are sold out again !

Can you imagine how many EF lenses they will sell during the next few weeks... The Canon exec that thought up the Digital Rebel scheme is probably an Executive VP by now...
