Default Finally joined the team but need some advice

Hi guys I finally bought a Canon XS last week and upgraded from a S3 IS. The only thing is for some reason after talking to the tech in the store I really thought the zoom with the XS 18x55 lends would be the same as my S3 12X but I guess I misunderstood.

I do allot of scouting for wildlife and was wondering what lens without breaking the bank I could add to give me a little more zoom ? Are Sigma lenses as good as the OEM Cannon ? I will only be using this lens for a month or so in the fall season.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Thanks

You will want at least a 300mm lens for wild life and if you want to shoot birds, you will need even a longer lens. The canon ef 70-300 IS USM is a pretty good lens in the mid grade level. You may also want to look at the tamron 70-300 VC USD or the 70-300 OS. But the canon and the tamron VC USD will be a faster focusing lens the tamron is pretty new. You are looking about 450-500 dollars for these better lenses. The low end tamron 70-300 LD DI II is about 190 as with the low end sigma 70-300 APO DG. But the will be soft on the long end of the zoom, which imho kinda defects the purpose you want to use the longer lens for.

Thanks for the reply I am using the camera to shoot deer when I scout or from the stand while I hunt to they will mostly be standing still and slow walking. I posted 2 links above are those lenses any good at that price and will they fit my camera ?

If you go with the 450-500 dollar range, I'll go with the canon. But the 200 dollar lens, I think the tamron 70-300 LD DI is the better low end lens or all the low end lenses out there.

not really, the best of the bottom of the barrel is the tamron 70-300 LD DI, then the sigma. But they are not that great at the longer end.

Ok I will look into that one then, is Ebay the best place as none or listed or can you recommend a site that carries fare priced used lenses ?

Thanks

in canada, I really do not know what are the good sites. I get used lens on ebay which is okay, if you know what you are looking for.
