Default How do I take a sunset/sunrise photo?

I recently bought a Canon Rebel XS and I'm wondering which setting is best for attempting these shots? I have a tripod, which I'm sure will come in handy, but any other pointers would be a great help!

ND filters can help if you want to shot straight at the sun; also a graduated density and a polarizer. But probably the best you can do is to go HDR. Look at some gorgeous sunrises from some members here, Mr. Walter_S, Mr. Walter C, Mr. Torngy, etc.

what you have to look at is the difference between the setting sun and the rest of the picture I tend to try and average out my settings from the darkest to highest from the sun its a bit of trial and error. You could try a bracket your shots

All the research i've been doing is setup camera in apreture priority mode and focus as normal and note the settings for shutter speed, then put camera in manual mode dial in the same settings and underexpose (IE double your shutter speed). If you have someone posing in front of you to be included in the photo use fill flash so they aren't a dark silhouette.

Lots of videos on youtube to explain this.

Hope that helps!
