with the 50 1.8, they are pretty rugged lenses, you can pick up a used on for around 70.

I only paid that much for my 50 f1.8 new a year or so ago. But I see they seem to have gone up a lot - $119 on Amazon.

Yeah, they use to be 50 bucks used. But with the price of dslr dropping over the years. More and more people are getting into it. So the price has gone up. It will be about 125 soon with the announced price hikes on canon lenses.

We are talking about the Mark II? Rugged and tough are not the first words that come to my mind. There are a lot of people around who've broken theirs. The Mark I is supposedly a different matter, but they haven't been sold new for many years.

Yup the 50 1.8 MKII. I got that lens with my canon eos 630 back in the days. It is still going strong and more uses with digital now.

Have you read any of he countless reports on POTN of people who've had theirs break into two pieces? I must admit I've had no problems with mine, but I do cosset it just as I do the rest of my gear (photographic and other).

POTN was where I saw the mashing youtube or the 50 1.8 II. So one posted it on a thread there about lens toughness a while back.

But honestly after 16 years, it is still working fine. Only thing was a cleaning as it accumulated dust over they year. But that is normal, and I lugged it everywhere. So I have been very happy with the ruggedness of the nifty fifty.
