So the Nissin makes the best video game ? How does it compare functionally as a flash?

And thanks for the reference, Mark. It seems that 42nd Street are adequately reputable and the buying experience is safe, if not altogether restful!

The all function are pretty much the same, it just how you like the interface better. I like the simpler bmw design. LOL But if you can, go to a camera store and handle them. I personally like the second strobe for a filler flash options the metz and nissin have. So trying out is the best way to decide which is best for you.

Sadly I can't do that - I have to decide based on what I read here and elsewhere on the internet. Based on what I've read I'll probably get one 580EX2 and one 866, or maybe two 866's. But I don't need to decide for a week or so.

2 di 866 is a better deal at 326 each. It is hard to beat. But either route they will both do a nice job.

Or even at $274 each (at Amazon).

Here's some write-up on the best video game:
http://photos4clix.com/?p=767

-> Check out how easy it is to switch between Master and Slave, or channel and group... You'll need a lot more dexterity on the Canon (that is if you don't have to consult the manual first), does any body here remember what a C.Fn setting is? Better yet try to work the 580EX buttons in the dark - Good luck!

... and regarding the 2nd filler head on the Di866 (or Metz):
"My initial reaction to the Sub-Flash was that it had possibilities. After testing the bounce light with and without the Sub-Flash, all I can say is wow! It’s like using a fill-light or reflector to fill shadows. "

If it's any comfort - The Nikon CLS is much worst than the 580EX is useability: It has three additional sub-modes including manual on its wireless which make it quite convoluted in getting around on the SB-900.

The Nissin simplifies this and makes is so intuitive that any cell phone users can get it going right out of the box (The Di866 doesn't even come with a manual!!!)

The Nissin 866 arrived last night. It is visibly more powerful than my 430ex II, as it should be by the stated specs. I was able to effortlessly connect it as a controller for my 430. OK, well, I was able to set the 866 as the master flash without looking at the manual, but I had to dig out my 430 manual to learn how to access the remote function. The 866 menu is rather self-explanatory.

Test shots at ISO 1600 showed some noise, but it was reduced effectively by software, and the resulting 8x10 print appeared sharp. I'll try to figure out how to drive the ISO down to 800 to see what that does for the noise level.
