The 7D is a great camera, and if you tested it and trust the person then it is a good deal. It is a higher end camera then the 50D. Great AF system. Now does it fit your budget, as the 50D new is still allot less. That is a different story.

i own the 7d and i don't think they even compare. The speed that you will get from the 7d is super. But it really does matter if it fits in ur budget. But hands down i would say get the 7d over the 50.

Hi deterpawson

I own a 7D, as well as a Canon 350D. I've used (but not owned) various XXD Canon cameras (eg 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D...) but I've not used the 60D yet.

Last week I returned home after visiting friends and family interstate (in Tasmania) for 10 days. I took the 350D with my 15-85mm and 100mm Canon macro lens. While I was there I also used and gave advice to some other people about photography and cameras (and used a few XXD Canons too).

What I can say is that when I came home, and the 7D is a radically different feel to the 350D as well as a significant noticable upgrade to the 50D. The focus, handling and viewfinder are so much more user friendly than the 350D.

The 50D is probably about half way between the 350D and 7D (in terms of build, handling, and AF).

As you mentioned it is a brand new 7D, for $1300 Canadian, that is a good price! I'd get it. The shutter rating on the 7D is 150k, while the 50D is 100k. However having said that, my 350D is still going strong after 90k (while it is rated at 'only' 50k).

If you are going to want to capture sports, the 7D probably has the greatest advantage (superior AF to 50D in every way). Also note the 50D has no movie function (if that's important to you).

I find this page a helpful review / comparison too:

Let us know how you go!
