Default RAW images are noisier

Using the RAW output mode for my Canon EOS Digital Rebel result in images that are noticeably noiser than a similar shot that is output in large JPEG.

Any thoughts.

I can tell it is noise since I can remove it using the DeSpeckle filter in Photoshop.

Hmmmm....given that the camera must compress a jpg image, I find your findings a bit off from the expected. What ISO?

in the EOS "P" mode with 1600 ISO, the raw images are noiser than the the same shot in large JPEG.

Are you comparing it to the JPG that you extract from the RAW, or from a separate picture?

Just a guess, but the camera may not be applying any noise reduction to the RAW files because of the additional time it would take to process them.

I've not tried this with the D100, but in camera noise reduction in that model is only recommended for very slow shutter speeds. Any other ISO noise can be subsequently removed in Nikon Capture Editor.

Regards,
Graham.
