Default lens question

Does the 24-105L at 24mm compete with the 17-40L at 24mm favourably? how bad is distortion compared to 17-40L? I want to buy the 24-105 for travel landscapes with the 5DII. would like to just take the one lens on a trip but am told distortion is bad on this lens

The Canon 24-105 does have a lot of distortion and vignetting at 24mm, but the 17-40 isn't very good either. And where their ranges overlap, the 24-105 is a lot sharper.

See:

Thanks, just wondering if this will do the job as the only lens I take on an overseas trip, mainly landscapes and people shots

On a FF body, I think it's the best choice.

Default My contribution to the confusion

You may find this interesting. There are some who say that the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM is better at 24mm than the Canon 24mm 1.4L II USM.

I cannot say that I understand all the research that goes into that comparison. But I was truly surprised to that a zoom lens can outperform a prime lens.

Canon makes 3 good lenses at 24mm.

24-105 w/IS
24-70 2.8F (No IS)
24mm prime (No IS)

I think everyone wishes that the 24-70 had IS. If it did, it would be a hammer of a lens.

I like my 24-105 w/is for outdoor shooting very, very much. As I read your post, I guessing that you’re not looking for extensive bokeh in the photographs. Of course, if your outdoor shooting includes night time shooting, you might need the lower f-stop. But I use my 24-105 as my everyday, walk-around lens.

Attached is a photo I took this past weekend outdoors with my 24-105 lens. EXIF: F4 1/320, focal length at 105, 2.7 meters from subject, flash set at –1 since (Tom & Sammy were under a picnic shelter).

Both dad and mom (not seen here) liked this photo.

Faithfully Yours,
FP
