Well, it's done . I was watching an auction as I was replying to all your wonderful responses, and ended up winning a slightly used Tamron for $323!!! I was going to buy new, but now I can put the left-over funds into a Speedlite .

I feel extremely relieved at this point- now I can move on to other things! After I get it and use it a bit, I will post my thoughts. And after the photo shoot I will post links to the finished work- that is after I choose an image hosting site . Guess that is next on the agenda! Been looking at SmugMug for down the road, and maybe Picasa for now? Already have my puppy photo shoot there:

That was done with the Nifty-Fifty in about 10 minutes .

Thank you all for everything!!!

One of the nice things about these forums is that you rarely see
anything even approaching a flamefest. I often wonder why? Are
photography enthusiasts just more civilised than the rest of the
population?

Oops! I thought you were comparing the non-VC Tamron to the
Canon and Sigma lenses. By all accounts the cheap non-stabilised
Tamron is better than the more expensive stabilised Tamron and
Sigma lenses. One of those rare occasions when the cheaper option
is the better one.

Gear list
Canon 7D
Canon T1i (wife's)
Canon 10-22
Canon 24-105
Canon 50 f1.8 (seemed like a good idea at the time)
Canon 70-300 (not the "L" version)
Canon 17-55 f2.8 (wife's)
Canon 55-250 (wife's)
Notice a brand trend here?
I take it you have a preference for Canon gear

Happy Shooting.
You won't get away with any false modesty around here. We have
all seen your excellent pictures in the Post Your Photos forum.

I must say, I am very jealous of you- you have shorelines AND castles!!! .
The castle is Blackrock Castle, Cork, Ireland. It is about a mile
from where I live. You don't need to burn any jet fuel to visit:

Cork has a large natural harbour, so we have plenty of shoreline,
even though the city is quite a few miles in from the sea.

I always enjoy seeing photographs from forum members in other
parts of the world. They usually give a more interesting and accurate
view than the very false images we see on TV and in the magazines.

Go over it with a fine tooth comb, put it through its paces, and see if you really got what you paid for.

The caps are easy to do without, but not the hood. Make sure you get it.

Get the original sales receipt!

In the US, Tamron lenses have a 6 year warranty, but warranty service requires the original sales receipt.

And good luck. That's a fine lens.

RebelYell, have fun with that new lens.
Corkpix,
Steve's is one of the nicest ran forums around making it a fun place to spend time.

As for staying with brand names, that's a wife thing again. I just like things to run smooth around the house and a happy wife keeps things running smooth.

Thank you for the comments on the pictures I have posted. I do get lucky every once and a while when shooting.

If my wife said I should buy the expensive lens, I wouldn't complain either.

Thank you rlddg!

Thank you Calicajun, I am sure I will!!!

@ TCav:

I asked about the receipt, and no joy . But I kinda expected that... And believe me, the day it comes in I will be shooting EVERYTHING!!! Comes with caps and hood- made sure of that! I checked out the seller a while back- seemed reputable? And if MY wife said "buy the expensive lens" I would just fall over and DIE so I wouldn't have any of these problems!

I am VERY excited (as if you couldn't tell ). I really was going to buy new- I was watching the auction and in the last like 10 seconds I bid $333 figuring I wasn't going to win it anyway, and when the page refreshed I was like HOLY CRAP I WON?!?! So now I get to go shopping for a speedlite- if anyone has suggestions I'm listening... Probably won't be able to afford an official Canon, so comparable brands please!

Thank you all again, you are all OUTSTANDING people
