Default canon 50d with a 580 ex ll

hello peoples,
does the 50D pop-up flash have the ability to trigger the 580ex if it is set up off camera and with/without a cord.
my friend has a nikon D90 and she is able to do it.

Was your friend triggering a 580EX with a Nikon D90's CLS system? The 50D doesn't have remote flash support built in from what I understand. You would need to use Canon wireless hardware or 3rd party hardware to trigger the flash off camera.

i will look into getting a cheaper trigger from ebay, yunguo or something like that

ok was the flash set in slave mode. if so i think any flash from any camera would set it off. or was her hood down and set it off by IR..

This is correct. A slave flash is triggered by detecting another flash, it doesn't need any type of wireless connection. You could do the same thing with your point & shoot digital camera. The D90 has no wireless flash capabilities. Just like your Canon, you would need to purchase wireless transmitter & hot shoe like the one you mentioned.

yes i do believe she had her pop up flash up and her flash as a slave.
so im assuming i can do the same.
